Solvent-dependent critical properties of polymer adsorption.

چکیده
Advanced chain-growth computer simulation methodologies have been employed for a systematic statistical analysis of the critical behavior of a polymer adsorbing at a substrate. We use finite-size scaling techniques to investigate the solvent-quality dependence of critical exponents, critical temperature, and the structure of the phase diagram. Our study covers all solvent effects from the limit of super-self-avoiding walks, characterized by effective monomer-monomer repulsion, to poor solvent conditions that enable the formation of compact polymer structures. The results significantly benefit from taking into account corrections to scaling.

Influence of solvent quality on polymer solutions: a Monte Carlo study of bulk and interfacial properties.
The effect of solvent quality on dilute and semidilute regimes of polymers in solution is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The equation of state, adsorption near a hard wall, wall-polymer surface tension, and effective depletion potential are all calculated as a function of concentration and solvent quality. We find important differences between polymers in good and theta solvents. ...
متن کاملPolymer adsorption in a poor solvent
We dlscujs polymer adsorption in a poor solvent. For a single chain we find a wetting transition on an attractive wall when the thermal correlation length f is of the order of the adsorption length D If D is larger than f, for weak adsorption, the polymer chain partially wets the solid surface in the same way as a small liquid drop if D is smaller than f, strong adsorption, the chain forms a fl...
متن کاملCoordination polymers from a highly flexible alkyldiamine-derived ligand: structure, magnetism and gas adsorption studies.
The synthesis and structural, magnetic and gas adsorption properties of a series of coordination polymer materials prepared from a new, highly flexible and internally functional tetrakis-carboxybenzyl ligand H4L derived from 1,2-diaminoethane have been examined. The compound poly-[Ni3(HL)2(OH2)4]·2DMF·2H2O 1, a two-dimensional coordination polymer, contains aqua- and carboxylato-bridged trinucl...
متن کاملHumidity effects on the wetting characteristics of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) during a lower critical solution transition.
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) is expected to find utility in tissue engineering and drug delivery, among other biomedical applications. These applications capitalize on the intrinsic lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the polymer: below the LCST, enthalpic gain from intermolecular hydrogen bonding between PNIPAM and water molecules dominates the solvation; above the LCST, entr...
متن کاملChapter 6: Effect of Temperature on Nonionic Polymer Adsorption on SiO2 in Aqueous Media
6.1. Goal The objective of the work described in this chapter was to determine if the adsorption of a hydrogen-bonding homopolymer on SiO2 could be enhanced by thermal manipulation of solvent quality above or near the cloud point. It was shown in Chapter 2 from the studies of Killman and Malmsten that insolubility alone will not drive polymer adsorption, when the polymer is well solvated. Howev...
